Ghana’s Strange Records on Google and the Valentine’s Day Fiesta

The internet has become one of the major sources of information in every advanced society today. Most people resort to the internet when battling with answers to their problems. Google as a search engine seems to know everything and if you even type, “What food is God eating today?” I am sure you are going to get answers to that.

According to Google, the most questions asked by Ghanaians on Google in the year 2013 are “HOW TO LOVE and HOW TO KISS.” Those were the questions most Ghanaians asked on Google in the year 2013. It is interesting to know this right? Eiii Ghanafo)!

According to this same Google and a research conducted by University of Ulster-Northern Ireland, Ghana is ranked fourth as the country whose men have the biggest manhood in the world; with Dr. Congo and Ecuador ranked first and second respectively and South Korea ranked last. Did I hear someone say what about America? They were ranked 96th. Ooh yawa ooo. Ghana is not only endowed with natural resources but our men are also endowed with”heavy things.” Praise God!!! I doubted these records of Ghana until the day I mistakenly peeped one passenger’s “THING” when we alighted at Linda Dor Resort on the Kumasi-Accra road to refresh up. I couldn’t believe my eyes and I think his “THING” might have been the project work of Angel Gabriel.

I am at Google again and this time around, I typed “VALENTINE’S DAY” and by surprise I had 251,000,000 results in 0.26 seconds. In one of these results, Valentine’s Day is a special day celebrated to remember Saint Valentine and it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionary and sending greetings cards.

Indeed, Valentine’s Day is a special day especially in Ghana but we have associated the day with some sense of bad image because we think it is a day to show and make love. I never heard about Valentine’s day until one virgin Thursday morning in 2002 at a village, when my big brother‘s fiancée presented him roasted maize with groundnut; what we call in twi “nkyewe3” as her valentine’s day gift to my brother and a bundle of firewood to my mum, in an attempt to show love and appreciation. My brother also in return, gave her two eggs of guinea fowl as his Valentine’s Day gift to her. Wasn’t that romantic? Today, it is a different story; you dare not give such gifts to your partner on valentine’s day, even if it is ostrich eggs from   Romania, she is going to reject It and regret she had ever been in a relationship with you. These days, they expect precious and expensive items like phones and even with that you have to be careful not to buy “cocoyam or yam”, she is going to drop it right in front of you. They want “sweet potato” which can show their pictures on Pluto and Jupiter and if possible to their ancestors who didn’t live to see them.

As we celebrate this year Valentine’s Day, I want to entreat you to be very conscious; it is a time to SHOW love but not to MAKE love. I want us to cease this special day to ventilate all our grievances with people. If you have any issue with your room mate, a friend, love partner or a relative use this Valentine’s Day and iron out your differences. Hatred is a disease and hating someone is just like burning down your house to get rid of a rat, you end up being the loser. Love is the greatest commandment and we must all learn to abide by it.

Let’s try and get gifts for people especially the poor children and our colleague needy students around us. A life filled with loving deeds and good character is the best tombstone. Those who you inspired and share your love with will remember how you made them feel long after your time has expired on earth. So carve your name on hearts not stone. What you have done for yourself alone dies with you; what you have done for others and the world remains forever. The Hebrew word for love is “ahavah” which means to give. As Pastor Eastwood Anaba always say “Let love reign.” I wish you a Happy Valentine’s day. God bless you. WE ARE NOT CHILDREN OF A LESSER god, “EBEYEYIE”.
