Are you proud to be a Woman?

I have always been wondering why Adam will tell God in Genesis 3:12 that “The woman you gave me” instead of saying “the woman I requested for”. Adam sounded like God imposed Eve on him when in actual fact he requested for her. I don’t want to blame Adam much because sometimes a woman can frustrate your life and you may begin to talk like the mad man at Odonpuase lorry station.

Regardless of all this, to men I think women are the most precious creature among God’s creation. As for me I just can’t live an hour of my life without a woman. I know you are beginning to think that I am a womanizer, yes! I appreciate your quick thinking ability but womanizing is something I am yet to consider in my life because the beautiful ones are not yet born and I doubt if they will be born in Ghana. Of course beautiful girls cannot stay in a “Dumsor” country.

Women are said to represent over 50% of the world’s population and they play significant roles in every sphere of life. Trust me; there would have been no war on earth if the world was a feminist world. Most of our intriguing issues would have been solved on tables instead of resorting to war. May be the only possible war we would have experienced is the war between Brazil and Peru over hairs or Ghana and Nigeria over make ups. Almost all conflicts, war and genocides are ignited by men and women and children become the victims.

It is rather unfortunate that we have only 30 female parliamentarians out of the 275 of Ghana’s parliament. Women are remiss to do active politics because of the insults and stigmatization we have associated with our politics. A research conducted by Ghana Integrity Initiative showed that women are less corrupt than men and if we want to fight against corruption, we must allow competent women to occupy sensitive positions.

Women are said to be their own enemies. They behave like crabs placed in a basket; I mean they all have ‘PHDs’ (Pull her down). Give a man power and the next thing he will do is to amass wealth for his family but when you give a woman power the next thing she will do is to amass arrogance to stamp over her fellow women and so most women do not vote for their fellow women in elections. “Should I be the one to vote for her to come and rule over me?” This is the basic question they ask themselves. I just want to advice our women that you should not rely on men for your empowerment because no serious traveler depends entirely on the legs of another traveler for his journey. The fact is that men are not ready to empower women, so you must empower yourself. And your fight for empowerment will not be fruitful when some of you keep on reducing yourself to ‘sex commodities’, I’m sorry, but it’s the painful truth.

I was so happy when I came to the university to hear about a portfolio called SRC Women’s Commission. I had a feeling that it was a good initiative that could help to empower ladies on campus but upon several observations I came to realize that it’s just a mere portfolio. It is a toothless monkey (not worthy to be called toothless bulldog sef). They don’t organize any enthralling program that will mousetrap all ladies to attend. Imagine inviting Nana Konnadu Agyeman Rawlings aka “Be Bold”, Ngozi Okonjo Iwaela a renowned Nigerian Global Economics and former Director of the World Bank and Dr. Joyce Banda of Malawi to campus, wouldn’t they inspire many ladies on campus?

My dear ladies, you must rise from the inferiority complex, strive for excellence. I believe that through rigorous discipline and extended hours of extreme hard work you can be on par with men. Believe in yourself, never give up. You cannot clean your past but you can learn to open a new page. A new page of women empowerment, with self determination and enthusiasm you can achieve it. “A busy, vibrant goal oriented woman is so much attractive than a woman who waits around for a man to validate her existence”…together you can do it. Trust me. Women are not children of a lesser god. BE PROUD TO BE A WOMAN, BECAUSE I AM PROUD OF YOU.
