University Students Deserve Better Hostels

Back in the days, university education looked not much stressful compared to today. Our fathers had the privilege to stay in their hall of affiliation throughout the four year campus life.

Today, halls of residence aren’t enough to even accommodate even only freshmen resulting in some freshmen men roaming from place to place in search of hostels. It is out of this phenomenon that some selfish persons who call themselves hostel operators defraud students in broad day light but university authorities appear powerless. This is probably because some of the hostels belong to some senior staffs and members of universities.

Aside the exorbitant hostel charges and lax security at various hostels across the country, sanitary conditions are most often worse exposing students to malaria, cholera, and other diseases.

Electrical devices including fuses, fans, and even plugs are in deplorable state in many hostels due to the poor maintenance attitude of hostel operators.

When I look at these awful experiences encountered by several students in different parts of the country, my heart ponders and I ask myself…Is there a body in charge of ensuring sanity in the hostels business? It seems like nobody cares.

University authorities and the Ministry of Tourism need to do more to protect students from these criminals. Living in hostels in Ghana as a university student is increasing becoming more scary and uncomfortable for our future leaders.
