Property of unknown value was destroyed last night after University of Nairobi students went on the rampage to protest the death of their colleague.

The student who succumbed to injuries at the Kenyatta National Hospital yesterday was knocked down by a van on university way on Saturday. University of Nairobi students protested late into the evening on one of Nairobi’s busiest highways, causing irreparable damage.

A student union’s official told Capital News Beat that the deceased was a third year student who was pursuing a degree in medicine at the Chiromo campus.

The students stoned several motorists on roads around the university for several hours from 7pm last night on learning their colleague had died before police intervened to restore calm.

The situation only normalized at about 9.30 pm when anti riot police officers lobbed tears and shot live bullets in the air to disperse the students.
