The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey has indicated that if Legon continues at the rate and direction it is heading now, a third class student of Legon will compete head on with any first class student from any of the universities in Ghana.

Prof. Aryeetey said this in an interview on Radio Univers. The VC was a guest on Campus Exclusive show to interact with students of the University and also educate students on his policies and vision.

Most of the questions students asked during the show focused on the new grading system of the University. Responding to the grading system issues, the VC said the new grading system and other initiatives are not meant to make life difficult for students or to make it difficult for students to obtain First Class but they are rather geared toward making the University of Ghana a first class university and also give the University the grounding to compete favourably with any university in the world. “A first class graduate from the University of Ghana must be capable and different from others from other universities” he added.

Prof. Aryeetey went on to tackle other areas including the internationalization of the university. He said University of Ghana is seriously mobilizing funds and very soon Legon students will be sponsored outside to other world-class universities on an exchange program.

He added there’s also a program coming up called the “Legon City Project”. The project will help the University to convert some of its physical assets into money.

The VC also touched on sanitation and security on campus. According to him, the current security situation on campus is a headache to the Management of the University and they are doing everything there is to bring the situation under control.

Commenting on the recent SRC elections, Prof. Aryeetey said it is unacceptable the way political parties exploit the cracks in the system and influence students leadership. He added the University Management was not happy about what happened and the BNI’s intrusion was disrespectful to the Authorities of the University.
