UEW security officer convicted for stealing student’s smartphone

The Winneba District Magistrate’s Court presided over  by Mr. Charles Owusu Nsiah has convicted a 32-year old Security Officer of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) to a fine of 300.00 Ghana Cedis for stealing a Samsung  Galaxy S3 Mobile Phone.

Josiah Tempong a native of Gomoa Assin in the Central Region pleaded guilty and was convicted by the court on his own plea.

Narrating the fact of the case before the court, Prosecution Police Detective Sergeant Peter Agbelie said, complainant of the case is a student of the same Institution (UEW).

He said on 20th January, 2015, while the accused was on duty at the faculty block at the North Campus of the University at about 1730 hours, the complaint after writing her examination handed over her bag containing a Samsung Galaxy S3 and One Tecno Mobile Phone with chargers to him at his desk and went to her colleague for discussions.

The prosecution said the complainant return in a few minutes for her bag and realized that the Samsung Galaxy S 3 phone valued at 600 Ghana cedis was not in the bag.

Detective Police Sgt. Agbelie said the complaint confronted the accused person but he denied having stolen the said mobile phone.

The complainant reported the matter to the police and the accused was arrested, the prosecution added.

According to the prosecution the accused was then escorted to his house by the police and a search was conducted in his room, where the said Galaxy Samsung S3 Mobile phone was found.

The prosecution said the accused person (Tempong) in his cautioned statement admitted the offence and he was arraigned after investigation.
