The Minister for Education, Lee Ocran has given a strong indication the University of Allied and Health Sciences in the Volta region will commence operations by September this year.

The Minister told Parliament, Thursday the school is expected to admit its first batch of students numbering 200 for the 2012/2013 academic year in September.

According to Joy FM’s Sammy Darko who monitored parliamentary proceedings, the Minority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu was unconvinced by the new commencement date of the University, citing a similar pledge made by President Mills last year. He claimed that President Mills last year indicated the University was to start operations in September of 2011, but that did not materialize.

In response to the Minority Leader, Lee Ocran said he was not in the country when that announcement was made last year and assured the house that the ministry under his watch has done everything needed for the first batch of students to be admitted.

He further added that plans for a permanent site for the school has been completed and that development on the site would commence shortly.

According to Lee Ocran, in the interim, the school will have to rely on private facilities to meet accommodation and infrastructural challenges that may arise.
